Formal or informal? The first step in creating your holiday centerpiece is deciding if you want a posh, formal look or a more folksy, down-to-earth decor. If you need your centerpiece to be perfect, consider puchasing a floral centerpiece or buying a pre-made centerpiece at a craft store. On the other hand, if you want a more personal, home made touch, creating the centerpiece yourself is ideal.
Decide on a size. Centerpieces are pretty, but they shouldn't get in the way of the food. Make sure that the centerpiece is large enough to be decorative but small enough that there is still room on your table for everyone's plate and silverware as well as all of your serving dishes.
Set a budget. Any holiday craft project can get out of hand. After all, craft stores are full of cute accessories and nifty gadgets designed to lure us into overspending. Decide how much you can spend on your centerpiece and stick to your budget. Even if you don't want to spend anything at all, there are ways to make your centerpiece attractive.
Gather your materials. Before heading off to the store, consider what you already have at home. Items like an antique ceramic serving bowl, a woven basket, or even an uncooked squash can all be components in a centerpiece. Natural materials like dried twigs and colorful fall leaves can also make fun table decorations.
Once you have collected the centerpiece components that you already own, make a list of what you need to complete the project. For example, you might want some silk flowers, fall-colored candles, or faux fruit and vegetables to fill your serving bowl or platter.
Put it all together. Once you have your materials, it's time to arrange them in an esthetically pleasing fashion. If using candles as part of your centerpiece, make sure that the flames will be separated from any flammable material and that the wax drips will be caught.
Snap a picture. Create a memory of your artistic accomplishment by snapping a photo of your centerpiece. Helium members, if you have a centerpiece picture you would like to see featured on this zone, please contact me!
